The Quiet Revolution: How Insta360 Is Redefining the Panoramic Camera Market

Insta360's X6 marks a shift from action cams to everyday life. Founder Liu Jingkang explains why the future of panoramic cameras is about disappearing into the background, not just capturing more pixels.

Ten years ago, a panoramic camera was a product you had to explain. Why would anyone need to capture the entire world around them? Insta360's first model, the Nano, plugged directly into an iPhone, essentially acting as a peripheral. It was a clunky accessory at best, requiring a convoluted workflow: shoot, transfer, stitch, then hunt through a 360-degree sphere for the actual shot you wanted.

Fast forward to today, and the company's X-series has become a staple for skiers, cyclists, and motorcyclists. But something surprising started happening with the X5: people began using it for travel, graduations, weddings, and family gatherings. Insta360's own data now shows that over half of its panoramic camera buyers aren't buying for action sports at all. They're buying to document their lives.

That shift is forcing a fundamental rethink of what a panoramic camera is for. Insta360's founder, Liu Jingkang, has a somewhat counterintuitive vision: the ideal camera is one that makes you forget it exists. And that's the philosophy driving the new X6.

From 'What Did I Capture?' to 'What Did I Miss?'

The original selling point of a 360 camera was simple: you never have to frame a shot before pressing record. The entire scene is captured, so you can choose your composition later. That's why even the early, non-waterproof Nano ended up strapped to helmets and selfie sticks. In the heat of a ski run, you don't have time to compose. The camera captures everything, and you sort it out later.

But that created a new problem: the sorting. For years, the pain point was the post-production. Liu is blunt about this: the best camera should not require you to think about the camera at all. That's why the X6 introduces a 'zero-editing' feature. When you plug the camera in to charge, it can automatically analyze the day's footage, pick the highlights, apply virtual camera moves, and cut a finished video. You wake up, and it's done. If you want more control, an 'AI Director' feature in the app lets you specify people, scenes, themes, and video length.

Solving the 'What Do I Do With All This Footage?' Problem

This is a significant shift in the market's value proposition. For a decade, the pitch was 'capture everything.' Now, it's 'capture everything, and we'll take care of the rest.' The X6 also introduces a first-person head-tracking module, worn on your chest, that lets you 'look to shoot.' You can output a standard flat video without ever diving into the 360-degree footage. There's also a 'gimbal mode' that creates a virtual gimbal within the 360-degree sphere, allowing for smooth pans, zooms, and tracking, all while outputting 4K flat video.

Liu's goal is to reduce the attention required for photography itself. He wants users to simply press a button and enjoy the moment. The camera should be invisible. This is a qualitative change in how the product is positioned.

Markets Are Made by Problems, Not by Models

When asked about the market size for panoramic cameras, Liu doesn't cite a TAM (Total Addressable Market) model. He reframes the question entirely: 'Market size isn't predicted by a model; it depends on how many problems you solve.' He points out that panoramic cameras are still two orders of magnitude away from smartphone penetration. But he sees that as an opportunity, not a limitation. 'These are all problems,' he says. 'And problems are markets.'

This is a distinctly different approach from the typical consumer electronics playbook, which often starts with a market forecast and works backward. Insta360's approach is to find unresolved problems and build solutions, even if the initial market seems small. The company's mission, Liu says, is 'to record and share,' not to create. He argues that 'creation' is a well-served need in the market—pro cameras, lenses, and editing software abound. But 'recording' is fundamentally different. You can't hire a photographer to be with you at every moment. The need is for a device that captures life passively, without demanding attention.

From Action Sports to Everyday Life: The Next Big Shift

The first big discovery for Insta360 was the 'action + panoramic' crossover. Users mounted the Nano on helmets, and the company pivoted. Now, a second shift is underway: from action sports to everyday life. The data shows it. More than half of X5 buyers are using it for travel and family. Liu sees this as the 'biggest common denominator' in consumer needs: helping people look good in photos and capturing their children growing up.

The X6's design choices reflect this push toward mass adoption. A smaller body, longer battery life (140 minutes at 8K 30fps, a 51% improvement), and more automated editing all point to making the camera a low-friction part of daily life. The goal is to make the camera a habit, not a tool.

The Endgame: 12K, 16K, and the 'AI Photographer'

Despite the X6's improvements, Liu is clear that the hardware race isn't over. Panoramic cameras inherently spread pixels across a 360-degree sphere, so the effective resolution per view is lower than a standard camera. He predicts we'll see 12K and even 16K sensors in the future. But that brings a challenge: processing power and heat. A wearable camera can't become a coffee cup-sized device to accommodate a massive battery and cooling system. So the future lies in more efficient chips and AI.

The AI is the real game-changer. Liu envisions a future where the camera understands your intent—where you look, whom you care about, what you want to remember. He calls this the 'AI Photographer.' It's a system that learns your personal preferences for framing and editing, creating a 'thousand-person thousand-face' experience, much like an AI news feed. He believes this capability could see major advancements within two years.

Moving Beyond Video: Spatial Reconstructions and VR

Liu's vision extends beyond conventional video. He demonstrated a 3D reconstruction prototype that allows you to move your viewpoint within a captured space—not just turn your head, but step forward, approach an object, or orbit around it. This is a 'spatial camera' concept. The current limitation is that moving objects are hard to reconstruct, but Liu is confident that will improve.

He also believes that VR will eventually return as a major platform. When it does, the content captured by these cameras will have a new life. Today, we watch 360-degree videos on a flat screen, but in a VR headset, you're inside the scene. This could transform panoramic cameras from a niche product to a fundamental tool for capturing memories.

The Ultimate Goal: Becoming a 'Photography Robot'

Liu's ultimate concept is the 'photography robot.' It's not necessarily a humanoid robot with a camera. A drone is a closer physical example—a machine that can move in 3D space, choose angles, and find its own composition. But for now, the term represents a philosophy: automate as much of the photographic process as possible, to the point where the camera is an extension of your intent.

This philosophy might even lead Insta360 away from being a hardware company. Liu acknowledges that AI could eventually reconstruct 3D scenes from standard 2D photos, potentially eliminating the need for a dedicated panoramic camera. He's open to that. 'Maybe one day we'll become a software company,' he says. But he's confident that the underlying need—to authentically record a moment that matters—won't be replaced by generative AI.

In fact, new opportunities are emerging. Some customers are using Insta360 cameras to collect data for embodied AI robots. The 360-degree view provides context that a standard first-person camera can't. This reminds Liu of the early days, when users found an unexpected use for the Nano. He sees this as another 'problem to solve,' and for him, that's the market.

The evolution from a niche accessory to a potential everyday essential is a classic industry analysis story. Insta360 is betting that the real bottleneck isn't resolution or sensor size—it's the friction between capturing a moment and reliving it. If they can make that friction disappear, the market for panoramic cameras might just be as big as the market for memories.
